Traditions meet innovation in the MIAD 2022 Senior Exhibition

Mar 28, 2022 | News

Time-honored traditions meet 21st century technology and societal needs in the inspiring MIAD 2022 Senior Exhibition April 22 through May 7.

Generously sponsored by BMO Harris Bank, the exhibition celebrates the capstone projects of nearly 190 emerging creative professionals representing all of MIAD’s Bachelor of Fine Arts majors and minors, including the college’s new Animation program. The senior class is the college’s largest.

Among the projects:

  • An animated virtual reality interpretation of traditional Chinese ink painting.
  • An app to uplift, and broaden access to, inclusive dancewear for teenagers of all skin and body types.
  • An eco-friendly relief printing project that tested three organic materials – adapting the venerated printing press to promote a campaign for sustainable design.
  • An exploration of queerness – through natural and created spaces – as something not yet reached; “binaries” are transformed by stepping into queer time, searching for utopia.
  • A customizable, modular and sustainable children’s dollhouse toy that encourages exploration through building by including traditional and “nontraditional” rooms such as science labs and art studios.
  • A modern approach to quilting that introduces a younger demographic to this tradition through a physical box containing the pattern, tools and fabric needed for a quilt block.
  • A visionary school for inclusive learning focusing on the future of the public education system through the lens of the needs of students with learning disabilities, while keeping the experience accessible to all.
  • A triptych of paintings with autobiographical narratives surrounding themes of femininity, family dynamics, and gender roles.
  • An animated video series that aims to make the conversation and design about menstruation more gender inclusive.

The MIAD 2022 Senior Exhibition is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., with an opportunity to meet the seniors on Gallery Night, April 22, 5 – 9 p.m.
