Plum Blossom 2023 exhibition featured in Milwaukee Magazine weekend events

Plum Blossom Initiative will host its Bridge Work 09 exhibition opening reception on Saturday, September 30 from 6 – 9 p.m. Featuring works by Ellie Garry ’23 (NSP: Fine Arts) and Margaret Griffin ’23 (NSP: Fine Arts), as well as Julia Bradfish, a UW-Milwaukee alum, the initiative seeks to connect recent art school graduates with opportunities to sustain their artistic momentum. Muralist and MIAD alum helps City of Port Washington complete mural project

Interior Architecture and Design alum celebrates five years in business

Jennifer Hissa ’96 (Interior Design) celebrated the five-year anniversary of Great Chicago Kitchen and Bath, a design showroom that she owns. Collegiate Paper Art Triennial features work by MIAD alum

Haley Krob ’22 (New Studio Practice: Fine Arts) was selected in 2022 as a senior at MIAD to participate in the 8th Collegiate Paper Art Triennial, which concludes its nationwide journey at the Lyndon House Art Center in Athens, Georgia. Krob’s work, “Lily Pads I,” is cut paper with handmade paper and natural dyes. Read more about the Triennial here.


First-Year student awarded Cream City Foundation LGBTQ+ scholarship

MIAD alum creates “Mobile Mural” for City of Oak Creek

Lauren Marvell ’16 (Integrated Studio Arts) completed work on a 24-foot “mobile mural” for the City of Oak Creek, depicting landmarks from around the city. The mural, located on the city’s event trailer, was unveiled at the Oak Creek Farmers Market on Saturday. Read more about Marvell’s work.

In Sculpture Milwaukee’s seventh annual season, the non-profit arts organization placed sculptures around Milwaukee. One of the three-part installation “Untitled” by Pao Her is located on MIAD’s building on the Riverwalk, while an indoor exhibition at The Avenue features work by MIAD students and alumni. Steffane Timm ’14 (Communication Design) was named the new co-director for Wisconsin and Minnesota’s Veterans Business Outreach Centers by the Wisconsin Women’s Business Initiative Corporation. A veteran herself, Timm brings a multitude of experience in business, management and networking. “My focus is to ensure that each client is given the utmost support to learn, grow and succeed,” she said in the press release. As part of a service learning class called “Storytelling the Environment,” students in instructor Hj Bullard’s class partnered with LGBT milWALKee to provide creative solutions for their new House of History project. Intan Zulkifli ’24 illustrated several portraits of Black LGBTQ+ Milwaukeeans, which will be featured in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel through the month of June.

Illustration alum recognized for graphic design achievement for Illinois Farm Bureau

Exhibition proposals from MIAD faculty members Jamal Currie and Jon Horvath, professor emerita Jill Sebastian, alumna and MIAD’s Executive Director of Marketing & Communication Stacey Steinberg ’04 (Drawing) and alumna Anamarie Edwards ’22 (NSP: Fine Arts) were all selected. Two MIAD alumni win Mayor’s Design Award for neighborhood art installation

Brandon Minga ’04 (Illustration) and André Saint-Louis ’01 (Sculpture) worked together on a large-scale art installation project for the Near West Side neighborhood in Milwaukee, creating neighborhood markers with informational plaques and sculptures with design elements reflecting different aspects of the neighborhood’s history. Now, their work has caught the attention of Milwaukee’s mayor. “Art Against the Odds” featured in Milwaukee news

“Journeys from Africa to Milwaukee: Black Resistance and the Fight for Freedom” was unveiled September 1 at the museum’s Africa Gallery. Partners paved the way for art education in Milwaukee

Charlotte Partridge and Miriam Frink established the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee in 1920, fostering the early careers of many studio artists. MIAD alum helps find unmarked grave of Black victim of lynching in Milwaukee, raises funds for headstone

May 12, 2021

Tyrone Randle ’15 (Integrated Studio Arts) was on a mission to find the unmarked grave of George Marshall Clark, who was the only Black victim of lynching in the City of Milwaukee. After two days of searching and the help of others at Forest Home Cemetery, the grave was found and Randle helped raise funds for a headstone to be placed.
