MIAD x Marquette University student starts apparel business

Mariam Ali, a Marquette University graduate who studied Communication Design at MIAD through a cross-registration program between the schools, started her business “South through East” to highlight Middle Eastern and South Asian cultures through apparel. Inspired by an experience through MIAD printing logos for a boxing club, the current Marquette graduate student now redesigns popular logos using Arabic calligraphy. Andy Rash, associate professor of Illustration at MIAD, wrote and illustrated a new children’s book called “Eclipse.” The book follows him and his son as they view the 2017 solar eclipse. “Art Against the Odds” featured in Milwaukee news

“Art Against the Odds: Wisconsin Prison Art” runs January 16 – March 11 in MIAD’s Frederick Layton Gallery. The exhibition, curated by Debra Brehmer of Milwaukee’s Portrait Society Gallery of Contemporary Art and hosted by Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, features more than 60 artists who turned to creative production to mitigate the dehumanizing conditions of incarceration.

MIAD student interns design, create mural for MPM’s Africa Gallery

“Journeys from Africa to Milwaukee: Black Resistance and the Fight for Freedom” was unveiled September 1 at the museum’s Africa Gallery. The mural comprises three panels, each representing 100 years of history. Its unveiling culminated a collaborative process among eight MIAD student interns from several majors, Professor Brad Anthony Bernard ’93, MPM and community members.

Partners paved the way for art education in Milwaukee

Charlotte Partridge and Miriam Frink established the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee in 1920, fostering the early careers of many studio artists. MIAD alum helps find unmarked grave of Black victim of lynching in Milwaukee, raises funds for headstone

May 12, 2021

Tyrone Randle ’15 (Integrated Studio Arts) was on a mission to find the unmarked grave of George Marshall Clark, who was the only Black victim of lynching in the City of Milwaukee. After two days of searching and the help of others at Forest Home Cemetery, the grave was found and Randle helped raise funds for a headstone to be placed.
