The Art Education minor, offered in partnership with Alverno College, gives you undergraduate and graduate pathways toward careers in art education and careers that benefit from expertise in teaching and learning—including museum and gallery education, community art practice and teaching and arts administration.

Turn your creative practice into impact.
Continue developing as an artist and designer while learning how to create meaningful creative experiences for others. Coursework in the Art Education minor combines contemporary approaches to teaching and learning with hands-on field experiences and studio practice.
Students develop experience teaching in general and inclusive classrooms while continuing to build skills across 2D, 3D and technology.

MIAD’s partnership with Alverno College allows students to combine their MIAD studio education with coursework and field experiences in art education.

Undergraduate pathway
17 credits
Includes Alverno coursework in principles of art education, early childhood and elementary art, media and methods in art therapy and adaptive art field experience, plus six credits of intermediate- or advanced-level MIAD studio electives in 2D, 3D or technology.
Partial graduate-credit pathway
15 credits
Includes graduate-level Alverno coursework in teaching, learning and assessment, field experience and art education methods, plus six credits of intermediate- or advanced-level MIAD studio electives.
Note: Only graduate credits may later be applied toward graduate study at Alverno.
Want to become a licensed art teacher?
Students can continue their education at Alverno with significant credit toward licensure and/or a Master of Arts in Education following graduation from MIAD.
