Future-Ready Creatives

2025 – 2028 MIAD Strategic Plan

Introduction

Future-Ready Creatives charts the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design’s next chapter of growth and innovation. MIAD’s mission to ignite curious minds through art, design and service guides this plan to strengthen our commitment to student success, academic excellence and community impact over the next three years.

Focusing on three key priorities — People, Programs and Place — the plan strengthens MIAD’s commitment to preparing students for meaningful, creative careers while supporting an inclusive community where all students thrive. It builds on MIAD’s growing reputation for workplace-ready creative education, student success and partnerships that connect learning to life beyond the classroom.

As a living plan, Future-Ready Creatives is designed to evolve with our college and the world around us. It reflects MIAD’s belief that creativity is both constant and adaptable, and that our strength as a college lies in responding to change with purpose and collaboration.

Together, we’re shaping a future where MIAD graduates lead with creativity, compassion and impact — in Milwaukee and beyond.

  • Introduce proposal process for employee professional development, in alignment with Strategic Plan outcomes.

  • Continued growth in enrollment and higher retention across all student populations.
  • Increased student satisfaction and engagement through enhanced academic and personal support.
  • Every student completes a professional experience such as an internship, sponsored project or Lubar Innovation Center collaboration.

Priority 2: Programs

Goal: Regularly review and renew academic and microcredential offerings for alignment with student demand and workforce trends.

Strategies & Initiatives

Launch New Academic Programs

  • Introduce 1+ new certificate, concentration or degree program each year.

Expand Program Review Process

  • Produce for internal use an annual review of trends in art, design, technology and creative entrepreneurship. Produce aligned program health dashboard for annual review. Include Career Services, Admissions and Institutional Research as participants in the creation and review process.
  • Incorporate job and first destination placement as a key indicator in academic program review and set benchmarks for enrollment, retention and graduation outcomes at the program level.
  • Develop a review process for academic minors.

Dual Enrollment and Articulation Agreements

  • Partner with regional high schools to offer dual-credit foundational courses.
  • Establish additional formal transfer pathways with community colleges and four-year institutions to ensure seamless credit transfer and enrollment growth.

Microcredentials

  • Collaborate with regional and national industry partners to identify workforce needs.
  • Offer short-term microcredentials and certificates aligned with Wisconsin’s in-demand creative jobs; provide targeted recruitment and advising for eligible persons, including alumni, creatives and business professionals.
Measuring Success: Programs & Partnerships

MIAD’s progress will be measured through continued growth, innovation and alignment between academic offerings and workforce needs:

  • Launch new degree programs, certificates and concentrations that meet emerging creative industry demands.
  • Increase enrollment in new and existing programs while maintaining quality and access.
  • Ensure all majors meet revised academic review benchmarks tied to student success and career outcomes.
  • Establish new articulation agreements and dual-enrollment opportunities with regional schools and colleges.
  • Grow the number of transfer and dual-enrollment students who continue their education at MIAD.
  • Strengthen tuition revenue through program expansion and new offerings that align with community and workforce needs.

Priority 3: Place

Goal: Build flexible studios, labs and exhibition spaces supporting both traditional degree offerings and new microcredentials.

Strategies & Initiatives

Collaborative Spaces for Creativity

  • Prioritize classrooms, studios and labs equipped for digital fabrication, multimedia production and experiential learning linked to workforce skills and new programs. Provide consistent access, hours and tool training.
  • Create facility flexibility to accommodate all programs, including a revised Facilities and IT Plan in alignment with this plan.
Measuring Success: Place

MIAD will measure success by ensuring our learning environments reflect the creativity and flexibility of our community:

  • Increased satisfaction with campus spaces that support every student’s creative practice.
  • Ongoing upgrades to classrooms and facilities to enhance access, technology and collaboration.
  • Implementation of a revised, comprehensive Facilities Plan that prioritizes flexible, future-ready spaces aligned with academic and program needs.
