New residence hall to open across from MIAD in 2014

2014reshall-2Beginning in fall 2014, MIAD students will live in the new, apartment-style residence hall TWO50TWO just across from the college's main academic building.

The progressive-style building with sustainable systems and details was designed to meet the needs of MIAD students, who will be in close proximity to their studios and classrooms in the creative atmosphere of the Historic Third Ward.

The new residence hall will further enhance our innovative and supportive learning community," said MIAD President Neil Hoffman. "In addition to living adjacent to their workspaces, students will have opportunities to show their work inside and outside the building, with outdoor terraces for seating and student activities."

The six-story residence at 252 E. Menomonee Street is designed by Engberg Anderson Inc. and will feature:

  • Five floors of housing above a ground floor with 5,780 square feet of retail space
  • 75 fully furnished two-bedroom suites, each accommodating four students with a living room, kitchen and two bathrooms
  • Accommodations for nine student resident assistants and the resident manager, an adult MIAD employee
  • Amenities in each suite that include a twin bed, nightstand, three-drawer dresser, desk and chair for each student; flat-screen LED TVs, couch, chair and end tables in the living room; and stove/oven, dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave, disposal and stools for eat-in kitchen
  • Student lounges, common study areas and laundry rooms on all dwelling floors
  • The cost for the 2014-2015 academic year will be $7,500 per student, which is competitive with other colleges in the area and with other independent colleges of art and design, and includes the student's utilities, cable, Internet and Wi-Fi

Freshmen and sophomores who live more than 45 miles away will be required to live in the new residence hall in 2014.

Accommodations for upperclassmen will be available as space permits.

Until fall 2014, MIAD students, their resident assistants and resident manager will continue to be housed at The Park at 1824, an upscale building that offers private shuttle service and a direct public bus line to MIAD from its location 2.5 miles away on Milwaukee's east side.
