Industrial Design Print

form. structure. invention.

Our industrial designers see products that don’t exist; they also see how to improve those that do. They think in multiple dimensions, with a sense of purpose and function. An industrial designer’s life is a convergence of two things: curiosity and criticism. Two hundred years ago, our students would’ve been called inventors. Today, they’re designers, with the vision to reinvent and advance the tools and toys of everyday life.

MIAD’s Industrial Design major, ranked 10th in the country by Design Intelligence journal, immerses students in core principles of three-dimensional design, including perspective drawing, visualization methods, model making and use of materials. Our students experience the fundamentals of creative invention, marketing, psychology, ergonomics and engineering. They take advanced design courses where they have the opportunity to design products in collaborative situations, often for outside clients further developing skills in visual and verbal communication. Introductions to the latest computer software programs revolutionize image generation and pictorial representation of products.

Our Industrial Design faculty rank among the best in the country. Throughout the major, our faculty assists students in the preparation of their professional portfolios. They equip them for entry into professional design careers. Graduates of MIAD’s Industrial Design major are actively recruited by a wide range of prestigious international corporations, and design everything from backpacks to motorcycles to CT machines.
