Pre-College1ws“Being around so many creative people made me look at my own art in a different way and inspired new creative perspectives.” Eymber Sommer, of Chicago, Pre-College Advanced Studio Concepts Illustration student

Whether they come from near or far, MIAD’s summer Pre-College students experience an immersive and exciting exploration of visual art and design.

Both the two-week Core Studio Concepts and the three-week Advanced Studio Concepts programs help students develop artistic and career skills, and also prepare them for an art and design education.

Julia Zaychik, of California’s Bay Area, comes to Milwaukee each summer to visit family and decided to enroll in MIAD’s Pre-College Program to enhance her foundational art skills.

“I love to express myself in different media,” Zaychik said. “My art classes at home are very structured, but the professors at MIAD offer direction and encourage you to interpret and investigate subjects in your own way.”

Pre-College3wsShantal Ramos, of Racine, attended MIAD’s Pre-College Program last year and thrived in the creative and supportive atmosphere of the Drawing Through Printmaking class. She returned this year to pursue her passion of architecture and interior design.

Ramos said she particularly enjoyed the atmosphere in MIAD’s Two50Two Student Residence Hall (residence in the hall is not required).

“There is always something fun to do in the dorm. The resident advisors offer tons of activities that cater to different interests, and I have made so many new friends!” she said.

MIAD’s summer Pre-College experience culminates with two exhibitions.

The two-week Core Studio Concepts Exhibition is on view in MIAD’s Brooks Stevens Gallery on Saturday, July 18, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.

The three-week Advanced Studio Concepts Exhibition is on view in that gallery on Gallery Night and Day, Friday, July 24, 5 – 9 p.m., and Saturday, July 25, 10 a.m. – noon.

Families with young children should note that the exhibitions include nude and clothed figure drawings.

MIAD also offers teen and adult courses on Saturdays during the school year. Check here for soon to be posted information on fall offerings.
