cong-print-detailThe 41st Southern Graphics Council International (SGCI) conference, Print: MKE – hosted by MIAD and UW-Milwaukee’s Peck School of the Arts – features printmakers from around the globe. As many as 1,500 attendees will gather in Milwaukee March 20 – 23 for an array of printmaking events around the city.

The conference features panel presentations, workshops, a product fair, publisher fair, demonstrations and a bus tour of local galleries. Registration is open early January through the beginning of March, with early-bird registration ending February 15.

As part of the conference, exhibits are on view at MIAD as well as throughout the city, with alumni and faculty showing at the Peltz Gallery, RedLine Milwaukee and the Dean Jensen Gallery, among others.

Makers in Print: International Exhibition
Frederick Layton Gallery, January 18 – March 23

A joint exhibition at MIAD’s Frederick Layton Gallery and PSOA’s Inova Gallery, Makers in Print celebrates the global vitality of printmaking through works selected by coordinating curators from Argentina, China, Mexico, Poland, South Africa and South Korea. On view at MIAD are printmaking works by artists from Argentina, China and Poland.

Making Connections: A Juried Exhibition of MIAD Printmaking Alumni
Brooks Stevens Gallery, February 26 – March 23

Since its founding in 1974, MIAD’s printmaking major has evolved into one of the top print programs and production facilities in the Midwest. Alumni participating in this exhibition represent different generations of students who studied under a variety of faculty. Also on view are works from current and past faculty members who have guided the printmaking program.

I Had a Blueprint of History: An Artist Book by Lesley Dill
River Level Gallery, March 18 – 23

An artist’s book on handmade paper by the renowned artist, Lesley Dill, with poetry by Tom Sleigh. As an SGCI honoree, Dill is a recipient of the SGCI Lifetime Achievements in Printmaking Award.

Also on view during Print: MKE are a curated selection of works by SGCI honorees Lesley Dill, Margo Humphrey, Frances Myers, Alison Saar and Judith Solodkin/SOLOImpression.

Speakers and Awards

Keynote Speakers

  • Alison Saar – based in Los Angeles, she has exhibited in many galleries and museums nationally and internationally, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
  • La Ceiba Grafica – a non-profit studio and residency program by the association “Artistas Veracruzanos Bajo La Ceiba” headed by Per Anderson and Martin Vinaver.

  • Lesley Dill – SGCI Lifetime Achievements in Printmaking Award

Product and Publisher Fairs

The Publisher Fair, held at MIAD, features a showcase of print and other materials from fine art presses, book publishers and artist residencies.

The Product Fair on the UW-Milwaukee campus features tools, equipment and materials of printmaking.


 

SGCI is the largest print organization in North America, and its annual conference is attended by artists from across the United States, Canada, South and Central America, and Europe. Print: MKE is co-chaired by Rina Yoon, MIAD associate professor of Printmaking, and Jessica Meuninck Ganger, Printmaking area head and adjunct assistant professor at UW-Milwaukee.
