Illustration Print

representation. narration. commentary.

Illustrators are representational artists – their work is often metaphorical, communicating a concept, message or mood through an image to serve the needs of a particular client. Illustrators’ images live on compact discs, in books, magazines, and annual reports and on websites and in other interactive media. The professional life of an illustrator is varied, challenging and rewarding. Some work for publishers. Many freelance. But all imprint their own style on our visual culture through the work they do.

MIAD’s Illustration major prepares students to be professional illustrators by teaching the language of visual communication with an emphasis on problem solving. Our students experiment with various illustration media, including digital and three-dimensional media, to create a personal style that distinguishes their work technically and conceptually. The philosophy behind MIAD’s Illustration major is not for students to acquire standard styles but to find areas of interest and media forms that best complement their own idiosyncratic conceptual and technical “vocabulary.”

As students advance in the major, they build professional portfolios of work, and develop strong design skills while learning to properly prepare their work for publication. Coursework integrates image and text within design contexts to promote students’ comprehensive understanding of the roles of illustrator, art director, and designer. Students also gain important exposure and participate in networking opportunities through MIAD’s Illustration Seminar, where a series of workshops are presented by practicing professionals representing a cross-section of the field.
