do-mke-logoSummer festivals may have wound down, but there are still exciting upcoming events that celebrate Milwaukee – Doors Open Milwaukee and the 2014 MKE Film Festival.

Explore Milwaukee and get a behind-the-scenes looks at buildings throughout the city with Doors Open Milwaukee, Saturday & Sunday, September 20 & 21. MIAD’s studios will be open to the public, and Print Collective, MIAD’s printmaking club, will put on a screen printing demonstration, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Faculty and alumni are participating across the city, including Mike Brenner ’00 and Professor of Art History Chris Szczesny-Adams. Brenner Brewing COmpany is holding personal tours with Mike Brenner during Doors Open, and Brenner will be offering a sneak peek at the Pitch Project. Szczesny-Adams leads an in-depth tour, Maker of Milwaukee, touring buildings of Edward Townsend Mix, Milwaukee’s premier 19th-century architect.

mkefilm14-logoMIAD is proud to be a Community Partner of the 2014 MKE Film Festival, September 25 – October 9, for the film Sol LeWitt.

Sol LeWitt is considered the master of conceptualism, a man whose work has been exhibited near and abroad (the first instance of the artist’s “Wall Drawing 88” resides in our very own Milwaukee Art Museum), and yet he never attended his own openings and rarely spoke publicly about his work.

Chris Teerink’s meditation on LeWitt’s reclusive career allows the work to speak for itself. The film explores the philosophical underpinnings of the artist’s visually magnificent work through select interviews and by examining the simplicity of his concepts versus the arduous task of creating them through a Netherlands museum’s labor-intensive production of one of his famous geometric installations.
