CJ Scruton

CJ Scruton is a trans and non-binary writer who grew up in the Lower Mississippi River Valley. They completed their Ph.D. research in ghost stories at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee before joining MIAD full-time. CJ is the editor-in-chief of R2, MIAD’s official literary magazine showcasing student work, and outside of MIAD they are the director of the Milwaukee Queer Writing Project at Woodland Pattern.

CJ pulls inspiration from their degrees in literature and cultural theory (and yes, knowing way too many ghost stories), as well as an extensive career in publishing. At MIAD, they have taught courses in horror and sci-fi writing, LGBTQ+ studies, poetry and nonfiction, publishing and printing, and first-year writing and humanities.

CJ’s writing and sound art installations can be found in publications and galleries both nationally and internationally, and their debut book of poetry, Suite for Hallucinated Voices, can be found at Half Mystic Press in 2026.
