Alumni embolden Reconnection exhibition

Ten alumni converge to make their mark through a variety of materials and explorations in Reconnection, a first of its kind exhibition of alumni work on view Gallery Night October 16 – December 12, 2009. An Artists’ Lecture will be held on Saturday, October 17, from 1 – 2:30 p.m.

Curated by John McKinnon, Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Milwaukee Art Museum, and Jason S. Yi, a multidisciplinary artist and MIAD Foundations Faculty Chair, Reconnection offers a glimpse into contemporary art making from ephemeral installation work to painting with non-traditional tools like physics, gravity and chopsticks.

The selected artists are: Joseph Bolstad ’05, Paul Cowan ’07, Jessica Kaminski â01, Mayuko Kono ’05, kathryn e. martin ’01, Boris Ostrerov ’08, Nate Page ’00, Laura Paulini ’85, Dan Steinhilber ’94 and Christopher Willey ’04.

“I am honored to work with such extraordinary alumni on this project and to bring them together for current students and the greater Milwaukee community,” said McKinnon. The included artists demonstrate strengths in a variety of media, a testament to the college’s multimedia approach and trends of the current art world.”

“The showcased works span and sometimes blur the various artistic disciplines,” said Yi. The artists, whose formative aesthetics were shaped at MIAD, are actively engaged and immersed in the contemporary discourses in art. Reconnection, along with the entire MIAD community, will celebrate and highlight their accomplishments.

Joseph Bolstad ’05; Currently working in Pennsylvania, Bolstad’s exhibitions include Joseph Bolstad + Mayuko Kono, Zuisho-ji Art Projects, Toyoko; Aqua Art Miami; Juventus 2004, Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, Chicago; and North by Northwest, Commonwealth Gallery, Madison, WI.

Paul Cowan ’07; Residing in Chicago, Cowan has been involved in numerous exhibitions including Ends Mean, Pigeon Wing, London; Either Both/And Or Neither/Nor, Scott Projects, Chicago; The Dark Fair, Swiss Institute, New York; and You Can Depend On The Sunrise, The Green Gallery, Milwaukee.

Jessica Kaminski ’01; Kaminski’s photographs have been published in such notable publications as The Wall Street Journal, Seventeen Magazine and Movie Maker Magazine. She received the Excellence in Wisconsin Journalism Award for Best Photo Essay or Series, 1st and 2nd place in 2008.

kathryn e. martin ’01; Martin has had solo exhibitions at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan, WI; GardenFresh, Chicago; and the Wright Museum of Art, Beloit, WI. She has participated in many group exhibitions at a variety of institutions including Dean Jensen Gallery, Haggerty Museum of Art, Stevenson Blanche Gallery and INOVA, as well as exhibiting at Art Chicago, Aqua Art Miami and the Stray Show.

Boris Ostrerov ’08; A recent MIAD grad, Ostrerov has had a solo exhibition at the Racine Arts Council Art Gallery and was chosen to participate in the Milwaukee Artist Resource Network (MARN) Mentor’s program under the mentorship of Santiago Cucullu. When selected as the Folliard “Gallery Project” winner in 2008, he was described as “one of the most sophisticated thinkers and most promising painters to come out of a local art school in recent years.”

Nate Page ’00; Based in Los Angeles, Page has had solo exhibitions at INOVA, St. Cloud University and CalArts, and has participated in several group exhibitions at Otis College of Art and Design, Norma Desmond Gallery, Jen Bekman Gallery and CalArts.

Laura Paulini ’85; Paulini has exhibited at galleries across the country, including Eleanor Harwood Gallery in San Francisco; Repetti Gallery in Long Island City, NY; and Women & Their Work Gallery in Austin, TX. She was recently awarded a Morris Graves Foundation Residency and a fellowship at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, CA.

Dan Steinhilber ’94; Based in Washington, D.C., Steinhilber has had several solo exhibitions including at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Mattress Factory and Brigham Young University Museum. In 2008, he was awarded a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship.

Christopher Willey ’04; Recently returned to Milwaukee, Willey has had solo exhibitions at Northern Clay Center in Minnesota and Mode Gallery in Iowa. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions at Swell Gallery and Diego Rivera Gallery in San Francisco; Untitled Gallery, Sausalito, CA; and Galerie Sei-un-do in Zurich, Switzerland.
