Any class cancelled due to weather, instructor illness or other circumstance will be rescheduled one to two weeks after the conclusion of the class. There is no prorating of tuition if the student cannot attend the make up session.

“I want to go to art college, but will I be ready?” A common question, and an increasing concern when students have fewer options at their school to develop the necessary skill sets.
MIAD’s Pre-College classes offer a clear path to get prepared for college. We recommend the following incremental approach to develop the skills and confidence you will need:

• Drawing for the Portfolio: Grades 9 – 11
• Figure Drawing: Grades 10 – 12
• Scholarship Portfolio: Grade 12 (Fall Semester)

It is extremely important, no matter what discipline you are interested in, to have strong observational and figure drawing in your portfolio when you apply for college. Consider the three classes above as your “foundation” classes.

If you have time to explore beyond these, we encourage you to elect a class from the Adult/Teen section, where you can find painting, photography, illustration, graphic design classes and more. These classes are for ages 16 and up.

PC1034C: Fundamentals of Drawing
Developed for the beginner, emphasis is placed on developing vocabulary that provides a foundation for understanding drawing and exploring the formal key elements of two-dimensional composition, such as line and mark-making, form, value, scale, proportion, and spatial relationships. Through an exploration of the materials used in black-and-white drawing, students work from observation to develop skills that are applicable to other courses offered in art and design. This course provides a relaxed environment that promotes exploration and growth with one-on-one feedback from the instructor. February 21 – March 28, 6 sessions

PC182C: Explore the Luminosity of Watercolor
This course covers basic tonal and color mixing in watercolor, wet-on-dry technique and various approaches to wet-on-wet. Instruction progresses from simple exercises in the first week, to painting simple still life arrangements in weeks 2 and 3, floral painting in weeks 4-5 and landscape (from photo references) in weeks 5-6. No experience in watercolor or painting is necessary, but some drawing background is useful.

PC198C: Into to Acrylic and Oil Painting
This class provides an introduction to the basic materials, techniques and practices of direct painting. Students choose to focus their study in oils or acrylic, but acrylic is highly recommended for first-timers. Using a variety of still life as subject matter, students develop an understanding of color application, paint handling, composition and spatial issues, as well as other technical and conceptual concerns.

SB669C: Intro to Graphic Design (New)
Graphic Design is used every day to convey ideas, concepts and enhance experiences. From packaging at the grocery store to signs at the airport – we find ourselves surrounded by text and imagery. This class introduces students to the process of combining words, shapes, form and color to visually solve problems, and examines the impact of design on the world around us. No prior design experience necessary. Instruction also includes Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop basics.

PC102A: Drawing for the Portfolio
In this class, the instructor guides students in developing observational drawing and sighting techniques, design/composition skills and creative problem solving. Since a portfolio develops over time, students should expect this class to serve as one of the many steps they take in creating a strong portfolio for admission to a school of art or design.

PC1035A: Surface Design in Clay (New) – This class has been closed.
Explore texturizing, carving, stamping and drawing in clay. Using objects from nature, the kitchen cabinet and the hardware store, students invent new ways to use found objects as texture tools to create dynamic surface design rich in raw texture. Additionally, techniques of coiling, carving and stamping are explored while applying the philosophy of Wabi Sabi, the art of imperfection and happy accidents. Students complete two tiles and sushi dishes using several techniques from their surface design explorations.

PC1013A: Beginning Korean Brush Painting
Learn basic techniques of Korean ink brush painting from renowned master painter Mokwon, and gain an understanding and appreciation of East Asian art and its aesthetics. In-class demonstrations include basic brush stroke techniques, composition and essential skills needed to paint flowers, birds and iris. Supplies, including a brush and paper, are available for purchase during class.

PC1036A: Sewing Techniques: Quilting in the Sewing Lab (New) – This class has been closed.
Join fellow students in the Sewing Lab to learn two-dimensional sewing techniques, including piecing, applique, embroidery and binding. Students receive in-depth demonstrations and construct a small quilt or flag project from ideation and sampling processes to a well-finished final piece. Learn how to use our Janome tabletop sewing machines, and get a glimpse at MIAD’s industrial sewing machines. If students have a machine of their own, they may bring it in to get instruction on how to use it. There is opportunity for advanced students to use this as open studio time, with access to the hand tools and machines in a beautiful well-lit space. Please note: the MIAD Sewing Lab is a non-apparel space at this time.

PC1037A: From Photographs to Paintings (New)
Turn your favorite photographs into paintings! Using a grid as a guideline, students focus on paint application and color. Learn to paint working with the subject matter of your choice: landscapes, a cherished object, and portraits of people or pets. Through demonstrations, individual feedback from the instructor and group critiques, students of all levels gain confidence in their ability to translate imagery through paint.

PC178A: Reading a Work of Art
Why are some paintings considered great works of art and others are not? How does an artist invite the viewer into a painting, and then move them through it? How does a work reflect the art historical context within which it was created, and how, in turn, does it impact future generations? Artist Timothy Haglund has visited many of the world’s great museums with sketchbook and pencil in hand. Join him as he probes each work for its deeper meaning, and discover a new way to read a work of art. Please note: this class meets from 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

PC1039A: Experimental Drawing (New)
This course celebrates drawing as a process, and urges students toward experimentation as a means to develop and finalize drawings.  Experimentation with students making their own drawing tools from everyday objects such as toothpicks, branches, leaves and zip ties. With these tools, students investigate the ways surface choices and mark-making drive the creative process, and will begin to discover their own personal language of contemporary image making. This course is ideal for all levels of drawing interests.

PC1040A: Origami & Paper Folding Art (New) – This class has been closed.
Expand your creativity through the art of Asian paper folding techniques with various designed papers. Expanding on the Japanese word “Origami,” to fold with one piece of paper, this class explores Korean paper folding techniques, which includes cutting and gluing multiple pieces of paper to create three-dimensional forms. Beginning with octagonal and square patterns, projects evolve to more complicated objects such as birds, vases or lanterns.

PC111A: Intro to Digital Photography
Develop competency in the digital darkroom through lessons and projects that teach photography and digital editing skills that result in expressive visual language. No previous experience with Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom is necessary; however, students must have their own DSLR camera. This course includes photography assignments that require some minimal time commitment beyond the scheduled classes.

PC101B: Figure Drawing
Focus on the fundamentals of drawing from the human figure, an exercise that has been an essential component to visual arts training for centuries. Using primarily black-and-white drawing media while working from the nude model, students develop their ability to extract the figure’s gestural expression. Instruction and in-class drawing help improve the students’ understanding of structure, form building, anatomy and composition through demonstration and drawing exercises. Tuition includes model fees. Prerequisite: Basic drawing skills. Pre-College students must submit a Figure Drawing Consent Form to take this course.

PC1041B: Make/Believe: Draw! (NEW)
There are many ways to draw and describe your experiences, observations and feelings. This class looks beyond the conventions of observational perspective, and explores other modes that include narration, symbolism and pattern. Students engage with the schematic, abstract, and expressive possibilities of the mark. Selected artists’ drawings from around the world serve as sources of inspiration for specific drawing exercises. February 24 – March 31, 6 sessions

PC1042B: Through the Lens (New)
This advanced course pays critical attention to the ways photography, video, and film impact the contemporary artist.  Through explorative assignments, students make use of lens-based tools to address a wide scope of concerns: from the impact of social media, to the overt language of advertising, to the poetics of the fine-art exhibition. Each session introduces technical demonstrations supported by group discussions.  Together this provides concrete opportunities to develop skills and further enrich one’s individual development and approach to the medium of photography and video. Students must provide their own lens-based equipment (cell phones are acceptable).

PC1043B: Asian Landscape Brush Painting (New) – This class has filled.
The depictions of nature in the Asian landscape paintings are not mere representation of the external world.  The term “landscape” means mountains and water, rooted in Taoism, which emphasizes harmony with the natural world. During this workshop, students learn the basic techniques of brush strokes and tones to create mountains, rocks, water and trees. Supplies, including a brush and paper, are available for purchase during class. All levels of experience are welcome.

PC1044B: Motion Graphics for Video (New)
This course is an introduction to motion graphics and basic video compositing. Using Adobe After Effects in conjunction with Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, students gain an understanding of animated graphics, animated text and titles, simple character animation and visual effect techniques for use in video/film. In addition to technical instruction, students also learn the visual aesthetics of motion design and how and when to best use animation.  This course is for professionals and hobbyists alike, and is an excellent addition for anyone who has taken “Video Editing for Everyone”. No previous Adobe experience is required.

PC1045B: Digital Painting (New) – This class has filled.
In the process of scanning traditional drawings and paintings, as well as working with digital tablets, students use Adobe Photoshop to explore the digital tools used create digital paintings. Through the lens of color theory, composition, and mark-making students learn about brush panel techniques, advanced selection, layering options, blending modes, masking, and digital output processes. These digital painting techniques synthesize traditional approaches and digital methodologies. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge using Adobe Photoshop.
