animation. video. interaction. duration.
Time-based media relies on duration as a dimension. Unique sequences are formed by the interaction of time, movement, and space. These core components form unique sequences that act as the basis of visual story telling in animation and video. Breaking down narratives and recombining them through a pencil, computer or sculpture is the foundation of the visual process. Time-based media relies on understanding how light can convey mood, and how to capture emotion through drawing.
As the name implies, MIAD’s Time-Based Media (TBM) major focuses attention on work that changes with time. TBM combines video, animation and digital technology into one cohesive program of study. Students are exposed to traditional and computer animation techniques, video, sound, pre- and post-production methods, as well as experimental video and installation work. MIAD’s TBM major educates students to shift their perspectives to consider aspects of light, sound and motion as key guides in the comprehension of narrative.
Students enter the TBM major by exploring problem solving within the two tracks (animation and video) of time-based media while investigating the connections between these and other disciplines. Character development, storyboarding, script writing, sound recording and editing, and research serve as critical processes in the creation of four-dimensional works. Our TBM students actively engage in making as a mode of inquiry and gain experience in practical outcomes, such as commercial and fine art production.
Time-Based Media Professional Practice provides an overview of the field and prepares our students for entry in the professional world. Visiting professionals in the field offer presentations and critique to educate students on the dynamic opportunities in time-based media. MIAD TBM graduates act as video editors, producers, practicing studio artists, and animators. The mastery of communication through interaction and movement is a lifelong endeavor and a MIAD education is a springboard for the journey.
