Sculpture Print

material. process. exploration.

A sculptor’s hands see, and communicate best with shapes. Sculptors manipulate materials with intuition and vision, with light and motion. Space is a playground, and clay, metal, bronze, wood and found objects are employed to create art from every angle. The Sculpture major at MIAD is about choices. It is about vision that knows no up or down, and for those who see this way, sculpture is a tangible artifact of personal expression.

The interaction between art and spatial environment as a means of communication is the basis for MIAD’s Sculpture major. Both concept and technical proficiency are emphasized: how to create meaningful narratives, how to utilize space and light, how to be liberated by the mastery of sculptural techniques. Studio courses employ group critiques, museum and gallery field trips and consistent faculty consultation. Rigorous hands-on exploration is the focus of the major, and our students’ work is evidence of a constant interaction between their ideas and materials.

As students advance, their techniques and ideas often specialize. Work becomes profoundly personal, with steady one-on-one instructor interaction. At MIAD, we encourage sculptors to understand their role as a link between art and community, between people and the spaces they inhabit. MIAD’s Sculpture graduates complete commissions and exhibit work in galleries, museums, businesses and public spaces, or, go on to graduate school or prestigious post-graduate studio programs.
