Painting Print

oil. linen. history.

It is a treasured lineage – the smell of turpentine, and the shine of wet, glazed oil paintings. For centuries, painters have been the first explorers, the standard bearers, the definers of visual art. As a painter, one carries on this lineage, engaging aesthetic and philosophic questions and creating answers with oil, canvas and unique insight.

As a Painting major at MIAD, students are guided through a rigorous program of self-discovery that encourages both artistic and cognitive growth. It is a journey. The first part involves the study of technical, formal and conceptual issues and the identification of personal artistic values. Our students are encouraged to experiment with a variety of materials and techniques and master media as means of personal expression. Furthermore, the study of the human figure throughout the major furthers one of the greatest traditions in painting. The body of personal work one builds marks the growth from art student to professional artist.

The objective of MIAD’s Painting program is to graduate artists who demonstrate professional skill, self-discipline and knowledge of their place within the larger community of visual art. Many of MIAD’s Painting graduates continue to work as studio artists; others find commercial applications for their visual skills; still others pursue graduate school and teaching.

At MIAD, this is the brushstroke obsessive, history-laden major. Our students work realistically, abstractly, or conceptually. In the Painting major at MIAD, we provide the skills our students need to pursue life as a painter. They provide the dedication.
