MIAD offers a number of minors for students who may be interested in specializing in an area of study in addition to their major. Students who declare a minor will graduate with a minimum of 133 credits. It is recommended that students declare their intent to minor during the sophomore year. Specific course requirements are available through the Registration Services Office at MIAD.
Students may elect to earn a minor in any one of the fine arts or design studio disciplines offered at MIAD. In addition, MIAD offers the following studio minors:
- Animation
- Video
- Multidisciplinary Fine Arts Studio
- Time-Based Media
A total of 15 studio credits are required to complete the minor.
The art history minor is particularly valuable for students considering graduate study, curatorial work, or as part of professional training in design areas that stress verbal as well as visual skills. A total of 15 credits within the Liberal Studies division at MIAD are required to complete the minor. Students minoring in art history will fulfill their requirements through a variety of art history electives and discipline-specific courses.
A writing minor is particularly valuable for students considering graduate study, curatorial work, or as part of professional training in design areas that stress verbal as well as visual skills. A total of 15 credits within the Liberal Studies division at MIAD are required to complete the minor. Students minoring in writing will fulfill their requirements through advanced level writing classes, internships, independent studies and writing elective courses.
MIAD mission statement says: The Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design is a degree granting college where individuals discover and realize their creative potential. What if the creative potential students seek is related to, or driven and inspired by the natural world? We believe we should give an opportunity to students interested in learning more about nature, or that seek a career path where Natural Sciences merge with Art and/or Design to fulfill their dreams, and to quench their desires regarding the direction they would like their creativity to go.
A total of 15 credits with the Liberal Studies division at MIAD are required to complete the minor. Student minoring in natural sciences will fulfill their requirements through a series of natural science seminar and field experience courses.
MIAD offers the advertising minor in conjunction with nearby Marquette University. This minor is primarily targeted to students in MIAD’s communication design program to augment their degree. The main focus is on advertising and will best serve students whose goal is to work in an advertising agency.
A total of 15 credits are required to complete the minor.
MIAD offers the business minor in conjunction with nearby Marquette University. MIAD students electing to take a minor course of study in business will have a unique opportunity to explore a variety of business theory and practice areas. This minor would be equally useful to a designer or fine artist who intends to begin his own business or work in an established organization.
