connection. experience. concept.
Integrated Studio Arts (ISA) empowers students who are highly self-directed to customize their educational experience in a multi-disciplinary fashion. Students choose major fine art disciplines as the focus of their curriculum, as well as studio electives from the fine art curriculum, in order to maximize personal growth and breadth of knowledge. They are able to devote equal amounts of time and energy to more than one discipline, while maintaining a strong focus on each. Work completed in this major will be inherently ambitious, experimental and innovative.
Integration & Intersection are two core courses in ISA that establish the groundwork for successfully integrating media, concept and historical context. These courses emphasize the multiple integrations and intersections of concept and media in contemporary fine art – interdisciplinary, cross-disciplinary, multimedia, new genres, highly cognitive and completely intuitive work is discussed, created and embraced. ISA allows students to work in contemporary modes so varied they often transcend classification.
MIAD’s ISA major educates students to pursue careers as varied as the media they use in the studio. Our students rethink the boundaries of traditional modes of creation. They reevaluate the role of the artist in today’s society.
ISA is about connection, experience and concept expressed through appropriate technique. This is not about dabbling. It’s not about skimming the surface. At MIAD, the goal of ISA is to give students specific tools and experiences enabling them to create the kind of artwork they want to make now – and for the rest of their lives.
