For Parents: Life Beyond the Studio Print

ImageStudies show that students who are involved beyond the classroom/studio experience greater academic and personal success while developing valued friendships and leadership skills that remain with them long after graduation.

MIAD offers students myriad opportunities to enrich their college experience through engagement both on campus and off, including student government, student organizations, student activities and MIAD traditions, leadership training, free memberships for the Milwaukee Art Museum and Discovery World Museum, and major-specific professional organizations.

Housing

First-year students who reside more than 45 miles from MIAD are required to live in the college's residence hall – The Park at 1824 – a state-of-the-art, environmentally green building solely occupied by MIAD students.

  • Common areas featuring flat screen HDTVs, game tables, leather furniture and vending machines
  • Location in a residential neighborhood with close proximity to shopping, theaters, restaurants, parks and bike path; and to The Urban Ecology Center, where many students perform their Service Learning

Food Services

MIAD's food service is entirely voluntary; students can dine in the MIAD Café in the academic building when they wish, and pay only for the food items they take. Food service is provided by D&S/Davians, a Wisconsin-based, family-owned company founded in 1958 that specializes both in small, retail food service operations (like MIAD's) and high-end catering for special events.

Because it is a Milwaukee-area company, D&S allows for a flexible, more varied menu, fresher food items and a management team responsive to student needs. D&S also offers a variety of grab & go food items students can take home, including heat & serve, which will be available in the MIAD Café and at the Student Union across from the academic building.

The MIAD Café operates on a cash, credit card or debit card basis. Because few students carry cash, a credit card or debit card is recommended. The Student Union also takes credit and debit cards.
