Graphic Design for Professional Development (Deadline Jan. 3)
PD404B
Saturdays, 1-4 p.m.
January 7-April 21
No class on April 7
Tuition: $675 ($595 Alumni rate)
Instructor: Scott Baitinger
This course introduces participants to fundamental elements of visual communication using both traditional design materials and the Adobe CS5 Design Suite. The class is designed to help students identify a target audience, assess goals for each design project and sell a design solution to a client. By learning the components of design — line, shape, materials, color, photos, illustration and typography — students design a brand identity from scratch, complete with a style/identity guide. Once a brand identity is established, the class develops a complete marketing campaign. Sociological and psychological considerations are addressed and debated. Students apply their working knowledge of the target audience to showcase their ability to develop relevant design concepts. Instruction supports knowledge for design fundamentals in the areas of materials, layout, typography, color, and supporting art elements, such as photography and illustration. Confidence is gained with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Acrobat. At course completion, students present their materials to a client and provide comprehensive rationale for the work they produced.
Figure Painting Workshop (Deadline Feb. 4)

Saturday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
February 11
Tuition: $120
Instructor: Katie Musolff
Katie Musolff, 2010 Artist-in-Residence at the Pfister Hotel, is known for portraiture that conveys far more than just the physical likeness of her subjects. In this one-day workshop, she addresses the formal issues that go into making a successful portrait. Working from a live model, participants strengthen their skills in finding proportion, mixing the flesh tones and creating a portrait that extends beyond the simple features of the sitter, to capture the essence of their personality. Students may elect to work in oil or acrylic.
Prerequisite: Advanced work with painting the figure.
