MIAD's new exhibit "New Exchanges: Evolving Visual Ideas and Forms" is "the most interactive exhibition in MIAD's history," according to Mark Lawson, the college's Director of Galleries."The idea behind this exhibition, and all related activities, is to stimulate critical thinking and dialog," Lawson said. The exhibition runs for six weeks from January 20 through March 3 in the Frederick Layton Gallery, with special gallery hours from Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. A constantly evolving exhibit, it has three main parts. In the gallery's back corridor, MIAD students create original work through classes or as individuals. For example, Fine Arts Professor Jason S. Yi's Integrated Studio Arts sophomore class - Integration & Intersection II - is in the space on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. during the length of the exhibition. Other classes to be in the space include Interior Architecture + Design Senior Portfolio review; Integrated Studio Sculpture; Collaboration Class; and Independent Book Arts. All works created in the space give viewers an intensive perspective of the creative process. A blackboard will be placed near each work area for audience commentary. Critical thinking is the key theme of the east wing, where public class critiques are held and work is on view. The critiques are open to the public. Visitor comments are encouraged through an onsite blog that is accessible to arts writers and critics at expressmilwaukee/the Shepherd Express; GNAW, a MIAD-generated blog edited by MIAD faculty Debra Brehmer; ArtCity/the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel; Third Coast Digest; and design mind magazine. The writers and editors are engaged with the process in the gallery and online, and the public is able to view their writings in the gallery as well. A diverse selection of galleries, museums and non-profit exhibit venues are featured in the west wing. Each location will exhibit select works and present their mission, motivation and focus. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see the schedule of venues. The exhibit is supported in part by the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Greater Milwaukee Foundation's Mary L. Nohl Fund. Viewers can see student work in several other MIAD exhibits. The 19 students in MIAD's first semester class Professional Practices arranged "de novo: to photograph anew" in MIAD's River Level Gallery. The exhibit highlights each of the students' best photography work. An exhibition in the Entrance Gallery showcases the work of select Communication Design majors created during the fall semester. Students in sophomore-level Typography and Communication Design classes, and advanced- level Information Graphics, Art Direction, Identity Design and Environmental Graphics created the projects. Both 2D and 3D work are represented. "Burial Grounds: Explorative Drawings," by David Mueller '12 (Drawing major, Illustration minor), runs through February 10 in MIAD's student-run Erie Street Gallery.
