Recent grad 'making waves' at Discovery World

lauren rubin waves 160For Lauren Rubin '09, happiness equals Discovery World. The recent grad is a graphic designer for Discovery World Studios, where she helps to bring to life the exhibits at Wisconsin's premier learning resource for technology, water and innovation.

Rubin, who majored in Illustration with a minor in Communication Design, was hired early in fall 2009 and "hasn't sat still since."

"I use my creative skills in a lot of ways," she said, "and with everything I'm working on. I feel like I'm working on new projects every day."

Those include creating exhibition signs and graphics, pamphlets, posters, bus shelter ads, educational handbooks and prototype books for donors and sponsors.

So far, Rubin's favorite project has been working on the Reiman Aquariums, to participate in the transformation of the space and "to see work that I did produced on such a huge scale, including a huge metal fish that I drew."

She said she also worked intensively on the Underwater Labs section of the aquarium, which is now finished and open to the public. And shes very excited about a new exhibit, that she says, "is still a bit of a secret."

"I don't think I would have gotten this job at all if I hadn't gone to MIAD," Rubin said. "MIAD helped me not only to think creatively, but also to learn time management skills, how to critique myself and to handle critiques, deadlines, revisions and working with people and clients. I learned a lot in my time at MIAD, and I don't know where I would be otherwise."
