Library Instruction Sessions Faculty members should contact
to schedule an instruction session. Sessions are developed to focus on the research needs of individual courses. Topics can include an overview of materials available in MIAD's collection, use of the online catalog, TOPCAT, and online databases, the research process, finding information in specific disciplines, use of the World Wide Web as a research tool, and more. With proper notice, a computer lab can be booked to allow hands-on activity by students. Contact
or stop by the library. Please give us one-week's notice to allow for preparation.
Course Reserves Procedures Items can be put on reserve in the Library at any time during the semester. To put items on reserve, complete a "Reserve Request Form" (available in the Library), and bring both to the Circulation Desk. Reserve requests received 3 working days before the semester begins will be ready for check-out on the first day of classes. Requests received after that time will be processed as time permits. Please bring items to the library at least two days prior to mentioning them in class so they will be ready for your students. Items that can be placed on reserve include: MIAD library items, faculty personal items, photocopied articles. You may wish to have us create Electronic Reserves for photocopied articles; allow a longer lead-time for E-Reserves.
Library Purchase Requests Procedures Faculty input regarding books, media and periodicals for MIAD's library is very important. Notify Library Director, Cynthia Lynch, of any titles you would like to have added to MIAD's collection. The Director's decision to purchase or not to purchase an item will be based on the selection guidelines contained in the library's Collection Development Policy, on the interest of sustaining a balanced collection, and on budgetary limitations.
Slide Library Procedures To check slides out, place all slides face down on the photocopier along with your MIAD i.d. and make a photocopy; please be sure that each slide is fully visible. Sign and date the photocopy, and turn it in at the Circulation Desk. When returning slides, hand them to someone at the Circulation Desk. All slide circulation is recorded in an electronic database; you may receive a polite reminder to return slides that have not found their way back within the allotted three-week period of circulation. Faculty can search the cataloged portion of our slide collection online from computers in the library or labs; see library staff for instructions on accessing this FileMaker program. To order new slides, complete a Slide Request Form noting images needed, source of images, and date needed. Please be aware that the average turn-around time for shooting or ordering, processing and cataloging requests is 2 - 3 weeks.
Marquette Library Reciprocal Lending Policy and Procedures MIAD faculty are eligible to receive full library privileges at MU's Memorial and Science Libraries by obtaining a Marquette Courtesy Card; cost for the card is $5. Proof of faculty status will be required. Privileges include check-out of up to 10 items for a 4-week loan period, plus on-site access to all subscribed databases. Courtesy Cards may be renewed annually.
InfoPass Policy and Procedures MIAD is an official participant in the InfoPass program of interlibrary loan. This system allows students, faculty and staff to borrow up to three items from a participating library in southeastern Wisconsin. To use this service, find the item(s) you would like to borrow by searching the lending library's catalog (use TOPCAT and click on "Other Libraries" to find links to many local catalogs), then stop at MIAD's Circulation Desk and ask for InfoPass assistance. We will prepare a form that includes the title and call number of the items you wish to borrow; you then take that form to the lending library and obtain the materials. Loan periods are generally 4 weeks, with no renewals. You will be responsible for returning all borrowed items to the lending library.
