Intensive English Program for Artists and Designers

June 20th to August 12th, 2005

MIAD's Intensive English Program teaches English to creative people who have a particular interest in using English to enhance their professional and academic work in fine art and design.

  • Please contact , co-ordinator of ESL services, for more information about this program.

The MIAD Experience: An active experience with the entire city as your classroom. Students apply the knowledge gained in the classroom to authentic situations in the community and in the studio.

The Program: Active, Authentic and Applicable

This is an intensive active eight-week program. After an orientation and initial language assessment, the first three weeks of the program focus on English as a second language instruction. The last five weeks of the program are an intensive language, culture and studio course. For those students who have applied and been accepted to MIAD, there is a credit option.

Active
The focus is on active learning and the application of skills. The course integrates students' interests in language, art, design and culture. Speaking, listening, reading and writing are all practiced daily.

Students have regular one-on-one meetings with a trained tutor who is also a student at MIAD. Besides providing important conversation practice, these sessions provide an important link to the MIAD community.

Authentic
The program integrates key authentic language opportunities—Real English. These include the use of material from radio, TV, movies, newspapers and magazines. Lectures, projects and research will include full-time faculty members from MIAD's design, fine arts and liberal studies divisions. And, field trips are integrated with the curriculum and classroom activities. These trips have included visits to:
Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin
The Art Institute of Chicago
The Milwaukee Art Museum
Harley Davidson and other local companies

Applicable
Students create visual work, and the language students learn is linked directly to their creative work. Students describe and present their projects and ask questions about other students' projects. Students also discuss and critique other people's visual work. Students use English to talk about what is most important to them: their creative work.

Services and Accommodations
MIAD is a friendly place. We do all we can to make students comfortable:

  • Airport pickup at the Milwaukee Airport
  • Orientation and assistance settling in
  • Accommodations in MIAD's residence hall, one block from campus
  • Transportation to grocery stores
  • Kitchen facilities in the residence halls
