MIAD Career Services provides the following information on student
employment to assist you in understanding the job opportunities available to
MIAD students. Our use of the term "student employment" defines job
opportunities both off and on campus. Off-Campus employment is jobs offered
by businesses off of MIAD's campus. On-Campus employment is jobs offered
within various departments on the MIAD campus.
OFF-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT The Career Services Department
at MIAD realizes many students prefer employment that is not on the MIAD
campus. Visit the Career Services Department, Room R45 on the River Level,
where you can receive off-campus employment postings that are updated daily.
Additional information such as web sites, newspapers, and library resources
is also available.
What are common places of employment or types of off-campus jobs?
Cinemas, Coffee Shops, Galleries, Hotels, Museums, Restaurants, Theatres, and
Retail Stores such as Art Supplies, Books, Clothing, Electronic, Music,
Shoes, and Sporting Goods. A specific listing of such businesses is
available in the business database on the MIAD library computers. After you
have searched the listings, we encourage you to approach the businesses or
call to find out if you may submit an application.
What other sources are available to help in my off-campus job search?
Internet web site: Http://www.blinkpro.com/members/miadcareers Click
on the "General Job Search and Career sites" folder and the "Milwaukee and
Local Job Search Sites" folder for a variety of job search sites as well as
employment agency and newspaper sites.
ON-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT A high percentage of the jobs
available on-campus require students to be eligible for the Federal
Work-Study program. However, there are certain jobs that do not require FWS
eligibility.
For students who want to get a job on campus:
What is the Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program? The
Federal Work-Study Program provides need-based financial aid to students
that allows them to earn money by working part-time on MIAD's campus.
Students are paid monthly; their pay is not applied to their tuition bill.
When a student is eligible for FWS, his or her chances of being hired
on-campus are increased.
Who is eligible for FWS? Not all students are eligible
for FWS, because it is a government program offered to students exhibiting
financial need. To find out if you are eligible to participate in this
program, you must apply for financial aid by completing the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students who file the FAFSA will receive
an award letter. This letter will indicate FWS eligibility and the amount
that can be potentially earned during the academic year.
What types of jobs are available on-campus? On-campus
jobs are available in a number of departments throughout the MIAD community.
They include: Galleries, Computer Labs, Library, Art Supply Store, Student
Union and Cafe, Dining Room, Maintenance, Museum, Residence Hall, Learning
Resource Center, Reception Desk, Printmaking, Photography, 3-D, Sculpture
Labs, Career Services, Financial Aid, Admissions, Public Relations,
Institutional Advancement, Campus Life, Continuing Education, Special
Programs, Pre-College and others.
Why is on-campus work so beneficial? On-campus work is
beneficial because of the workplace being right at MIAD and the flexibility
of scheduling. Students work between 5 and 20 hours each week, and they may
be employed in more than one on-campus department. Another added benefit of
working on the MIAD campus is the development of professional relationships
with other students, faculty, and staff. Students also gain experience and
knowledge working in a department that may relate to their interests and/or
major of study.
How do I get a job on-campus? Find out what on-campus
jobs are available through the information posted in the Career Services
area in Room 45 on the River level. Applications are available in Room 45
in the Career area or directly from the on-campus supervisor in the
department where you would like to work. Apply and interview directly with
the appropriate supervisor as indicated in the job postings. (Please bring
two forms of identification with you.) Contact the Student Employment
Coordinator with any questions and to verify your FWS eligibility.
How do I get paid? Paychecks will be available on the
28th of every month from the Student Employment Coordinator in Room 45 on
the River Level. Direct deposit of checks into a checking or savings
account is available. Ask the Student Employment Coordinator for a direct
deposit form.
Will I be taxed on my FWS earnings? Yes, you will be
taxed on FWS earnings.
I received a FWS award. Do I have to work on campus?
No you do not. Students may decline their FWS award.
Will all students who want on-campus employment get an on-campus job?
Unfortunately the demand for on-campus jobs is high. We can not guarantee an
on-campus job to all students who receive FWS eligibility or want
employment. We encourage students to be open with their options. Students
who are willing to work in a variety of departments will have a better
chance of securing an on-campus job.
