“While growing up I knew I wanted to work for an athletic company designing shoes and women’s accessories, and at the time my dream job was to work for NIKE.”

Not a far stretch from NIKE, Margaux Butzen spends her days designing apparel and accessories for some of the world’s largest and most successful clothing and athletic companies, such as FILA and Under Armour. Eventually hoping to create her own apparel accessory line, Butzen is happy with the foundation of skills she learned in the Industrial Design program at MIAD. She says, “I now know that I learned more about my field and career in school than I ever realized.” And that career, like the designs she creates, is on the move.

Q. What is your first memorable
experience with art and design?

A. My first memorable experience with art was painting rocks with my grandmother at the beach. She is an amazing painter and always kept me busy with art projects.

Q. How did your MIAD education affect where you are today?

A. I can honestly say I didn’t realize how much I had learned at MIAD until I got out and started using it. The base I took away from MIAD I have now built into a successful career. I now know that I learned more about my field and career in school than I ever realized.

Q. What was the most valuable thing you learned at MIAD?

A. I learned how to deal with all kinds of people and designers. Our group work really helped prepare me for working with the awesome group of designers I work with now. The group work at MIAD was a great introduction into the whole concept of compromise.

Q. What would you tell a high school student who is considering attending MIAD now that you have experienced life after graduation?

A. You get out of your education what you put into it. MIAD can’t magically turn you into an amazing designer or fine artist; it can help better the talent you already have.

Q. If you had to sum up your job in a single sentence, what would it be?

A. My job is a culmination of innovative designing for several successful, licensed apparel and accessories companies, where I have endless opportunities to work with new contacts and amazing people.

Q. What are your goals for the future, in art and design and in life?

A. I eventually would like to start my own apparel accessory line, but for right now I am content with learning as much as I can and continuing to build my portfolio. And I’m doing a little freelance work on the side.

Q. Please define how you saw your major while you were in school, and how that definition has changed over the years.

A. I saw industrial design as pure product design, such as cars, home items, and point-of-purchase display designs. As I progressed through my four years at MIAD, I learned it was much more than just those things and that this preconceived notion of industrial design wasn’t what I wanted to pursue. During senior year of college, our class had very diverse group of senior projects, from housewares and cars to athletic protective apparel and handbags and shoes. That was the moment when I fully realized the spectrum of industrial design.
