Acceptance Criteria: MIAD accepts students who demonstrate the ability and potential to benefit from its programs and can maintain the college's high standards of artistic quality. MIAD students come from diverse backgrounds. Many enter the program with extensive art and design training while others are just beginning. MIAD accepts students for both the fall and spring semesters. Freshmen entering in the spring semester must attend the summer session. Although there is no standard formula for determining an applicant's potential for success, we believe the evaluation of the student needs to be comprehensive. Therefore, admissions to the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree program is based on a variety of criteria: 1. Proficiency in the Visual Arts as Demonstrated by the Portfolio. The portfolio review is given the most weight in the admissions decision as it is the most meaningful indicator of artistic potential and ability. 2. Academic Achievement as Shown on Official Transcripts. Academic performance as determined by grades and class rank is also important. A high school diploma from an accredited secondary school or equivalent certification is required for acceptance. Students applying for admissions with a GED must meet passing standards. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 is required; students below 2.0 will only be accepted at the discretion of the director of admissions 3. Personal Interview. The interview allows you to verbally present your individual artistic experience and aspirations. In addition, it gives you the opportunity to ask in-depth questions about MIAD's programs and learn more about our facilities, faculty and student life. 4. Essay. The essay allows you to present your individual artistic experience and aspirations in written form. It also provides us with a baseline sample of your writing abilities prior to admission. 5. Standardized Tests. MIAD does not require the SAT or ACT examinations for entrance into its degree program. However, MIAD recommends taking the SAT or ACT tests and will use the scores in the counseling and placement of new students. 6. Letters of Recommendation. MIAD does not require letters of recommendation, but welcomes recommendations to broaden our understanding of the applicants’ abilities and personal achievements.
