The community of ideas.

Liberal Studies is the wellspring for an education in art and design.

Our classes are lively and dynamic. Our instructors foster a rich and active-learning based classroom, meaning that students are invited into the process of inquiry. That is, students and faculty at MIAD are together responsible for shaping the questions that they investigate and research. We pride ourselves on offering an intellectually-rigorous curriculum that is student-based and therefore highly creative. At the same time, we will challenge your critical and analytical thinking abilities.

You'll be exposed to teaching methods you may not have ever experienced before. We specialize in small classes that are highly interactive, featuring topics that have real meaning to artists and designers in our society: Art History explores what was happening in an artist's world when he or she was creating; in science, Biology focuses on the human role in our environment so you can see all sides of controversial issues; Sociology investigates urban ecosystems and the influences that change communities; Philosophy presents challenging perspectives on how we make sense of our experience in the world; our writing program will offer you opportunities to meaningfully investigate and express your ideas, as well as the others in the world around you.

The key word for our curriculum is connectivity. We want you to be able to connect what you know with others. We want you to be able to express what you know with others. We want you to see how what you are learning connects you deeply and passionately to the world, so you can express your vision intellectually and artistically. It's also about knowing where you and your art or design fit in and reflect the world around you.

Liberal Studies will make you to dive into the world. Everyone is required to integrate community service into his or her studies. We don't live in vacuums, we live in communities, and part of our responsibility as creators is to give back to, and better understand, that community. Art and design aren't quiet pursuits – as creators we reflect a shared experience. We want you to be a vital active member of your culture and your and community.

When you graduate, you'll be an independent, creative learner who is a skillful researcher, thinker, writer and speaker. You will also be able to work skillfully with others in teams and as a leader. We'll be there for you with small classes, tutoring and highly interactive professors to make sure of it.
