The MAJORS Program has been developed for students who are doing advanced work. They are committed to, and passionate about, art and design, and are ready for intensive college level work. The program's aim is to give serious high school juniors, seniors and graduates the opportunity for a focused, first-hand experience in art career fields.
The technical concerns of each course of study emphasize proficiency with media and tools, the creation of real and illusionary forms, and the production of well-crafted works of art. These objectives are strengthened by the introduction and development of a verbal and visual language, and of an informed art historical frame of reference. Effective conceptualization is achieved through improved seeing, creative thinking and problem solving skills.
An important goal for the MAJORS Program is the development of a portfolio that illustrates the talent and skill essential for entrance to colleges of art and design. Young artists who have experienced this course of study develop work that expresses a broadened aesthetic understanding, and an advanced level of technical competency and creativity. During this program, students are given the opportunity to have their portfolios reviewed by MIAD faculty and staff. Through this process, strengths and weaknesses of the portfolio can be identified and recommendations for improvement can be made.
Class size averages 15. MIAD faculty teach all classes and supervise outside visits to studios and businesses related to the field.
Students must submit 10 slides of original work to be considered for the MAJORS program. Three elective MIAD college credits are given to students who successfully complete a MAJORS course. (Students may approach other institutions to transfer those credits.) In all MAJORS classes, workshops, and open studio will augment class assignments. Many of these will be scheduled for evening hours.
