Portfolio Day

After all of the rain, the day was resplendent with sun and the Third Ward was filled with students lugging portfolios of drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, sketchbooks, sculpture, and design. Artists! Designers! Students seeking advice, insight, critique! A confluence of talent! A gathering of skill and expression and gesture!

Re-Inventing Yourself: It's What We (Are) Do(ing)

We find ourselves at an exciting moment in time.

We have a new president, Neil Hoffman. We have a new batch a talented freshmen and transfer students. Our advanced-level “veterans” are returning for the new year. The joint is jumpin'!

In all of our orientations, with parents, new students, and faculty, we are spreading the word: we are in the process of remaking ourselves, reinventing ourselves, not only as individuals, because that’s what we do in education, but also as a school.

There’s a story here!

That’s what I hear constantly at MIAD, whether it’s from our students, our faculty, our staff, or visitors.

It has been the great joy of my life to spend the last fifteen years teaching at MIAD.  When people ask me why, what is it that I love about this school, the answer is easy.  The students.   The faculty.  There’s a community here--a buzz.  Call it a fierce energy, a compelling desire to create, to think, to imagine.  You feel it surrounding you when you walk the halls and explore the studios.  You hear it in the classrooms and the dialog between students and teachers.  This is a place of learning, of growth.  This is a story unfolding.
