Jose A. Chavez: Day of the DeadPrint

Sep 15, 2006

Jose A. Chavez, a local artist (and father of a MIAD alumna) will give a presentation about one of Latin America's most beautiful traditions: the creation of altars to celebrate the Day of the Dead. Jose's presentation will center on the crafting of the pieces that make up the altars which are true installations that include works of sculpture, painting, photography, pottery, paper cutting, flower arranging and food. A native of Mexico, Jose who holds a master's degree in business, is a self-taught artist who works in many different media using traditional as well as modern techniques and mainly "for the love of art making". The museums where his works have been exhibited include the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C., the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, Chicago, and the Milwaukee Art Museum (for whom he just completed two commissioned sculptures). He teaches at MATC, is a regular speaker a UW-M, and volunteers in several boards within the local Hispanic Community.
