Carl Sandgren LecturePrint

Mar 3, 2006

On Friday, March 3, Dr. Craig D. Sandgren will lecture on microalgae, their ecology and evolution. Microalgae are extremely important microscopic photosynthetic organisms found in sediments and plankton of freshwater and saltwater. They are the basis of most of the aquatic food webs, they are responsible for half of the living biomass produced yearly on the planet, and they can lead to many noxious problems somewhat related to human activities, such as cultural eutrophication, red tides, and the notorious green scum you can see in many ponds around here ...

Dr. Sandgren is an associate professor at UW-Milwaukee where he teaches about limnology, plankton ecology, and botany. His research interests mostly revolve around algal and plankton ecology.

This lecture is a component of the HS320 Botany class, but all members of the MIAD community are invited.

Everyone interested in learning a bit more about phytoplankton, and willing to be amazed by the diversity of shapes, colors and ecological/evolutionary tricks pulled out by this amazingly diverse group we call microalgae, is welcome to come to the presentation. It's free!

The lecture will take place around 12:30 in the science lab (P75) and it will probably last until 2:00 pm.
