Born in Tokyo and educated in America, Kinji Akagawa's work explores the contrasts we associate with places. Are they public or private? Inside or outside? Natural or made? His sculpture often aims to reconcile such opposites and make places a little of both. His graceful, contemplative style relies heavily on local materials and frequently incorporates tables or benches that invite the viewer to "use" the sculpture. Akagawa lives in Minneapolis and is on the faculty of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. His work appears in parks, plazas, sculpture gardens and private collections throughout the Midwest.
