Michael Gibson LecturePrint

Jul 25, 2002

In our relentlessly evolving world, designers are uniquely qualified to lead or significantly contribute to the kinds of strategic planning processes that instigate positive social, cultural and philosophical change. Designers directly affect and are directly affected by society's value systems in a manner unlike almost any other group of people: they anticipate, invent and redefine human perception and cognition. The process of design has imbued us with the ability to create in ways that really works to affect social behavior.

Michael Gibson's presentation will address how designers, teachers, artists and students can identify and then immerse themselves in project opportunities that allow them to experience and utilize design as a vital, positive social process.

Michael Gibson is an assistant professor in the communication design program at the University of North Texas. He holds an MFA in Communication Design from the University of Michigan (1993), and a BFA in Graphic Design from the Kansas City Art Institute (1985). His articles have appeared in Visible Language, Design Education in Progress, Rough magazine, Design Criticism and Zed, and he has lectured on design education and teaching information design and interactive media in a variety of venues around the U.S. and in Europe. He is also the co-project director and design director of the state-of-Texas-funded youth anti-smoking project "UnFILTERed" which has been active throughout the Texas public middle school system. He also knows deep down that if all the computers in the world got wiped out tomorrow by an eleven-year-old hacker from Peoria, he could still teach communication design and advertising using a pointed stick on a clean dirt floor.

This program is a part of MIAD's Creative Educator's Institute 2002 which has been generously supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, Midwest Express Airlines, and Miller Brewing Company.
