 It is important to instill in young graphic designers a sense of partnership
and collaboration. I try to look at the class as a group think-tank that inspires
and reinforces solid design direction. Having a finished project that one can
feel substantial ownership of, without being the sole contributor to, mimics
real-life working relationships with clients, creative directors and other partners.
Phil was appointed to his position after three years as a full-time MIAD instructor.
He studied graphic design at UW-Milwaukee and UW-Eau Claire and received a Bachelor
of Fine Arts from UWEC in advertising design.
Phil’s area of focus is corporate identity and environmental graphic
design. He spent over 20 years working in-house as a creative director for some
of Milwaukee's best-known businesses: Firstar Bank, Miller Brewing and Carson
Pirie Scott & Co. He also worked recently as brand identity director for
Thiel Design. Phil has worked on the development of many award-winning advertising
projects across all types of media. He also continues to do freelance design
work and paints Northwoods oil landscapes on commission. He is a member of AIGA
and United Adworkers.
