Selected to create a new public art work for Milwaukee's Third Ward, renowned installation artist Jin Soo Kim brings one of her ambitious pieces to Milwaukee along with other additional works. Incorporating found objects in sculptures that blend shape, sound and light, Kim's work often focuses on time and its powerful presence in daily life.

The most recently produced work in the exhibit bridges the gap between contemporary experience and the cultural paradigms of the recent past through cast-off materials integrated within the physical texture of the pieces. The antique knitting machinery parts comprising these elements were donated by one of the oldest businesses in the Third Ward, Reliable Knitting, and its late president and businesswoman, Isabelle Polacheck. Some of the work on exhibit was created specifically for this venue by Ms. Kim with the assistance, and in some cases collaboration, of a team of dedicated MIAD students.

In the photo above, renowned installation artist Jin Soo Kim and MIAD professor of sculpture Jill Sebastion are joined at an artist's reception on November 17 by MIAD sculpture students and alumni who worked with Ms. Kim. The group is sitting on a work comprising hats and machinery parts donated by Reliable Knitting and featuring the voice of Isabelle Polacheck. The students are (front, from left) seniors Lauren Janka, Jena Lee, Joan Gabel, Veronica Sabino (wearing clothes she fashioned from Reliable knits) and Care Ekpo. Next to the artist is senior Claudia Casaletto and next to Ms. Sebastion are MIAD alumni Joe Bolstad and Mayuko Kono.
