AH110 Western Art from Pre-History to 1400
Topics in Historical Art: Prehistory to 1400 is a course in which a number of themes in historical Western and Non-Western art are examined. Key art objects in cultural periods from prehistoric times to the 15th century will be the focus of study. Through intensive reading, writing and oral projects, students will learn to identify and discuss key works of art made before 1400 A.D. in Western and Non-Western cultures. In the course, students will engage in activities centering around observation, description, analysis of art objects.

AH111 Western Art in Historical Art: 1400 - 1900
Topics in Historical Art: 1400 to 1900 is a course in which a number of themes in historical Western and Non-Western art are examined, with emphasis on East-West cultural and artistic exchanges. Through intensive reading, AH111 introduces students to key art objects, creators and art from 1400 to the post World War II era. Through intensive reading, writing and oral projects, students will learn to identify key works of art from this period by artistic, cultural and critical criteria.

AH212 History of Modern and Contemporary Art
Primarily an object-driven course, AH 212 provides and in-depth study of modern and contemporary art makers and movements in the context of the critical, cultural and social issues surrounding them. Through intensive reading, writing, research, and oral assignments, students have the opportunity to study key figures, movements and theories. The course begins with a review of major trends in art since the end of the 19th century and follows with a close examination of art from the 1950s through the present day.

AH213 History of Modern and Contemporary Design
Primarily an object driven course, AH 213 outlines major styles and trends in communication design, illustration, industrial design, architecture and interior architecture and design from the beginning of the industrial period to the present. Through intensive reading, writing, research and oral assignments, students have the opportunity to study the philosophical, social, cultural and commercial concerns of such primary movements as Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Post Modernism within Europe, the United States, and Japan.

AH215 Contemporary Issues in Two - Dimensional Art and Design
AH 215 is organized around a series of thematic concepts examining contemporary issues in two-dimensional art and design [drawing, painting, photography, illustration, printmaking and graphic design] that will change from year to year. It draws on a variety of core readings, although the objects of study may change. Just as recent history, particularly in the last forty years, reveals the confluence of media and disciplines, AH215 will strive to reduce the artificial divisions between disciplines by engaging with ideas from a variety of disciplines and point of view.

AH216 Contemporary Issues in Three Dimensional Art and Design
AH 216 is organized around a series of thematic concepts examining contemporary issues in three-dimensional art and design (Sculpture, Industrial Design, Interior Architecture and Design, 3D communication design/ Installation) that will change from year to year. It draws on a variety of core readings, although the objects of study may change. Just as recent history, particularly in the last forty years, reveals the confluence of media and mos_disciplines, AH216 will strive to reduce the artificial divisions between mos_disciplines by engaging with ideas from a variety of disciplines and points of view.

AH217 Contemporary Issues In Time Based Art and Design
AH217 is course that provides an opportunity to study the history issues involved in time based art and design (digital photography, animation, video, web design, film and sound). Time based art and design media—from animation to video to web design—present the student with and extraordinary range in time, space, media and intellectual concerns. Emphasis is placed on the attempt to develop a new or possibly different aesthetic (and critical language) which acknowledges and integrates these "newer" media. Just as recent history, particularly in the last forty years, reveals the confluence of media and disciplines, AH217 will strive to reduce the artificial divisions between disciplines by engaging with ideas from a variety of disciplines and points of view.

AH318 Selected Topics in Art History
AH318 provides students the opportunity to give in-depth focus to a wide range of elective topics in Art History. Experience in the disciplines is broadened through intensive reading, writing, research and oral assignments. Among the topics which students may choose to study are courses such as: 19th Century American Masters; Early Chinese Art; Women, Art, and Society; The Bauhaus; The History of Industrial Design; and others.
