Direct painting materials, techniques and practices are introduced in acrylic and oil media. Working from direct observation, students are introduced to the formal visual principles emphasizing composition and color as elements of a stable pictorial space. Demonstrations, slide lectures and critiques support studio assignments and instruction in traditional and contemporary formats.

Indirect painting, glaze medium and techniques are introduced and practiced within traditional and contemporary painting philosophies. Transparent color theories, perception and formal principles provide the basis for directly observed studio assignments. Slide lectures, demonstrations and critiques assist in developing an expanded visual vocabulary.

Traditional and experimental techniques of opaque watercolor, egg tempera and other aqueous media are introduced and practiced. Painting III continues the investigation of subject, technique and structure fundamental to expression and communication. (Painting media open.) Course assignments provide for individual interpretation and experimentation. Intentionality is introduced and codified. Readings further perceptual standards and modes of criticism. Students examine painting philosophies through individual and group critiques, slide lectures and invited guests.

This course fosters the growth and development of a personally evolved pictorial philosophy. (Painting media open.) With instructor consultation, students are required to propose a self-defined course of study. Concept and content are examined as requisite technical and theoretical components. In addition, aesthetic philosophy is introduced and discussed. Traditional and contemporary painting issues are examined through lectures, guests and exhibitions.

The human figure is introduced in both theory and practice. Working from direct observation, media, media application and technique options are explored and developed. Critiques, lectures and demonstrations augment studio instruction.

The representation of the figure is addressed in both traditional and contemporary formats. Conceptual and critical philosophies are explored as students are encouraged to develop a personalized direction within figure utilization. Critiques, slide lectures and readings expand studio instruction.

Emphasis is placed on the continued investigation of media and techniques as elements of an aesthetic vocabulary. Course assignments provide conceptual challenges and emphasize individual interpretation and exploration. Traditional and contemporary painting issues broaden the context of this exploration.

Using the water media of their choice, students propose a self-directed course of study, with instructor consultation. Mastery of technical skill, process and concept of a personally evolved pictorial statement is stressed. Critical thinking and initiative are refined and demonstrated.

Prerequisites: FA324 FA325X Junior Painting (elective)
This elective provides students with an opportunity to combine their study in Painting IV with any additional three credits. The proposal required for Painting IV may be expanded for this additional credit load. Alternatively, a separate proposal may be written, subject to instructor consultation and approval. Requisite concept and content components are expanded as defined within the proposal.

In this Senior Painting course students continue to apply and develop technical skills and philosophical strategies demonstrating professional competence. Again, a proposal is required, as is an individual critique/exhibition. Readings, professional opportunities and sources, and invited guests expand awareness and further individual goals.

Students are required to demonstrate professional competence within an appropriate personal aesthetic. This self-directed study includes a final exhibit/critique with artist's statement. Career opportunities are discussed and examined in preparation for increased independence and career goal attainment.

Advanced Figure Painting students are required to present a written proposal for self-directed study, in consultation with the instructor. Intentionality and context are examined and discussed. An individual exhibit/critique concludes the semester. Work in this course may provide the basis for the thesis exhibition.

Through self-directed study, senior students evidence professional competence and resolved technical and philosophic skills. Individual artist/thesis statements are evolved and presented in a final exhibition/critique. Work in this course may provide the basis for the required thesis exhibition.
